Decorative ceramic tile, custom hand made tile for unlimited possibilities

How to calculate room square footage for ceramic tile, fireplace surround ceramic tile, medallion ceramic tile square footage, and more soon!

calculating square feet / square foot calculations

O.K., you say you're ready to figure out your square footage for your ceramic tile floor, ceramic tile backsplash area, or other ceramic tile design. Follow the easy steps below to configure your square footage:

  1. Measure the length of the area. For example 5.11 feet (71").

  2. Measure the width of the area. For example 18"

  3. Multiply these two numbers in inches together. For example 71" x 18" = 1287".
The result is the total number of square inches (SI).

  1. Divide this number by 144, the total SI in one square foot (SF). For example 1287 / 144 = 8.875. This number is the SF of the area.

ceramic tile fireplace surround calculation

You've made an extremely intelligent decision. You've decided to purchase some gorgeous Tiles with Style ceramic tile leaves for your tile fireplace surround. Now you just have to calculate the fireplace surround tile square footage.

  1. Measure the width & height of the top area of the fireplace surround. For example 12 tall x 46.11 wide.

  2. Multiply the two numbers; the width x the number of the height. For example 12 x 46.11 = 553.32.
This is the total square inches (SI) of that area.

  3. Divide the SI number by 144. (The total square inches in one square foot.) For example, 553.32 / 144 = 3.8425.
This is the total square footage of the area above the fireplace opening.

  4. Now do the same square footage calculation for the left side.

  5. Measure from the floor, up to the bottom of the top surround area, as shown in the diagram above. For example, 24" tall.

  6. Measure the width from left to right. For example, 10.6" wide.

  7. Calculate the square footage as in steps 1-3 above. For example: 24 x 10.6" = 148.40 / 144 = 1.03 SF.

  8. Take the total square footage from the left surround side and multiply the total square footage by 2, because there are two sides to the fireplace surround. For example 1.03 x 2 = 2.06 SF

  9. Add the sides and top square footage together for a grand total. For example 3.8425 + 2.06 SF = 5.9 SF.
  10. Always order a little extra, lets round it off to 6 square feet.

When we measure out your leaf order square footage, we push the leaf tiles tightly together. This actually gives you a surplus of ceramic tile leaves. We don't want you to run out. Plus, it gives you a little extra for another project!
